Choosing a Bike Shed for Your Outdoor Space
A bike shed gives your bicycles a dedicated home outside the garage or house. When comparing outdoor bike storage, consider both the space inside the shed and how easily you can move your bikes through the entrance. A suitable layout should make everyday storage convenient, with enough room for handlebars, pedals and any equipment you want to keep alongside your bikes.
What Size Bike Shed Do You Need?
Measure your longest bike from wheel to wheel, then check its handlebar width and overall height. Compare these measurements with the shed’s internal dimensions and clear door opening. External dimensions help you plan where the shed will sit, but they do not tell you exactly how much usable storage space is inside.
For multiple bicycles, allow for overlapping handlebars and pedals. Children’s bikes, mountain bikes and bikes with baskets or child seats can need different amounts of space. If a product does not list a tested bike capacity, check the measurements rather than estimating from the product photo.
Make Everyday Access Easy
Think about how you will approach the shed and wheel your bike into it. Check whether the doors have enough room to open fully and whether a raised threshold will affect access. Leave space outside the entrance to turn and manoeuvre your bike.
A compact shed may suit a narrow outdoor area, while a larger garden shed may be worth considering if you also want to store helmets, tools and other equipment.
Check the Base and Installation Requirements
Before choosing a location, check the model’s requirements for its base, assembly and anchoring. Confirm whether a floor is included or whether you need to prepare a separate base.
Consider drainage around the site and avoid positioning the entrance where water collects. Follow the product’s installation instructions when preparing the area and securing the shed.
Compare Locking and Storage Features
Check the locking arrangement on each model, including whether a lock is supplied or purchased separately. If you plan to use an additional bicycle lock or ground anchor, confirm that your chosen setup and base can accommodate it.
