A larger enclosure can provide more layout options, but dimensions alone do not determine suitability. Mesh spacing, frame construction and gate security also matter, particularly for small dogs or dogs that try to escape. A dog run should complement daily walks, interaction and exercise.
Planning a Dog Kennel and Run
A sleeping kennel and a dog run serve different purposes. The kennel provides a sheltered resting space, while the run provides an enclosed outdoor area around it.
If you are creating a dog kennel and run setup, measure both the kennel and the remaining space inside the enclosure. Keep the kennel entrance accessible and leave room for your dog to move around it. A covered run does not necessarily include a sleeping kennel, so check the contents of the model you choose.
Covered Outdoor Dog Runs
A roof cover can add shade and help shelter part of the enclosure from rain. Compare the cover dimensions with the full run dimensions, especially when choosing an extended layout.
Roof coverage varies by model, and extension sections may need separate covers. Position the run with seasonal sun, prevailing wind and drainage in mind. Your dog also needs a suitable dry resting area; a roof cover alone does not make an open-sided enclosure an all-weather shelter.

Consider how the ground surface will perform in wet weather and how you will keep it clean. If your dog digs or climbs, assess whether additional containment measures are needed for that particular setup.
